ezeTree is a self-hosted family tree application. This means that all data is stored on your own server and is under your complete control. We take privacy seriously and provide you with the tools to protect your family's information.

Data Storage

All data is stored in your own MySQL/MariaDB database on your server. ezeTree does not send any data to external servers or third parties. You have complete control over your database backups, access, and retention policies.

Privacy Controls

ezeTree provides several privacy features:

• Private Individuals - Mark individuals as private to hide them from non-admin users
• Private Families - Mark family branches as private
• User Roles - Control what different users can view and edit
• Registration Control - Enable or disable public registration
• Living Privacy - Automatically protect information about living individuals

User Data

When users create accounts, we store:

• Username and email address
• Encrypted password (using modern hashing algorithms)
• Role and permissions
• Login activity

Cookies and Sessions

ezeTree uses cookies to:

• Maintain your login session
• Remember your language preference
• Prevent CSRF attacks

No tracking or analytics cookies are used by default.

GEDCOM Imports/Exports

When you import or export GEDCOM files, be aware that:

• GEDCOM files may contain sensitive personal information
• Respect privacy settings when sharing GEDCOM files
• Consider removing living individuals before sharing

Your Responsibilities

As the administrator of this ezeTree installation, you are responsible for:

• Securing your server and database
• Regular backups of your data
• Managing user access appropriately
• Complying with applicable privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA)
• Respecting the privacy wishes of family members
